Thoughts on Hugo

I’ve been working with Hugo for a little while now and I think I like it… it’s definitely the best static site generator I’ve ever used. Which isn’t saying a lot, because it’s the only one I’ve used aside from FrontPage Express back in the early 2000s. I tried a few different themes out though, and while I was able to get one working for cosmosporia.com, the majority of them have been… annoying. I guess I’m allergic to Javascript. I’m not exactly trying to wow suspective clients though. I’m roling my own theme now, and so far I’ve been able to do all the tricks I wanted with just SVG files and CSS.

This is my first website if you don’t count my sdf.org page, which I kinda don’t. You’re very limited in how you can interact with SDF so it’s a pain to upload an entire site at once (or I guess I didn’t figure out a good way). Using a real hosting provider doesn’t cost that much more, and I’m enjoying how much more flexible it is.

In conclusion, Hugo is fine, as long as you’re willing to roll your own theme, or you know how to edit a pile of someone else’s Javascript.
